About the Event
The Stanford Club of New England invites you to this special wine tasting event with Kaj (“Kye”) Ahlmann, owner of Six Sigma Vineyard & Winery, and Michelle Hoy, MSM ’07, and Gary Pena, the proprietors of the Boston Wine Group. Kaj will lead a tasting of some of his recent releases and discuss how Lake County, CA, where Six Sigma is located, is becoming a new “hot spot” for wine.
About Kaj Ahlmann
Prior to producing fine wines, Kaj has been a leading influence in the insurance and re-insurance business for over 25 years. In the 1990’s he served as Vice President of the General Electric Company and a member of the Board of Directors of GE’s Capital Services. After leaving GE in ’99, he purchased a 4,300 acre ranch in Lake County, just over the St. Helena mountains near Napa Valley. Named after the Six Sigma management methods he successfully implemented in his corporate life, Six Sigma Vineyard is one of the pioneering vineyards in Lake County. High acclaim already heralds Kaj’s release of his second vintage, crafted by winemakers Denis & May-Britt Malbec formerly of Chateau Latour in Bordeaux.

About the Program
"Arts at the Time of the Founding" features a discussion of how the arts reflected and affected the vision and values of the country at the time of the founding.
About The Stanford Arts Initiative The arts are about creativity, though creativity is not limited to the arts. Intuition and imagination are integral to all research. Virtually every scholarly discipline at Stanford relies on the creativity of its faculty and students to advance the field. Merce Cunningham once said in an interview at Stanford, "I make dances so that I can see things that I have never seen before." The arts teach us how to see, and in the process, they also teach us how to remake what we see into something better.
The Arts Initiative proposes what no department or program by itself can achieve: a culture of creativity and innovation across the entire University. It reaches into all levels of University life: curricular, residential and research, making the arts central to a Stanford education. It seeks to produce students who are inventive in their lives and critical in their thinking & students with the vision to shape a world filled with challenges and surprises.
The arts already enjoy a strong presence at Stanford, with nationally ranked programs and world-class faculty. The Arts Initiative goal is to create a culture of creativity across the entire University by focusing on four primary areas:
• Enriching student life
• Strengthening core arts departments
• Creating new programs and expanding partnerships
• Building world-class arts facilities
About the Speakers
Gerhard Casper is President Emeritus of Stanford University and chair of the President's Executive Committee for the Arts Initiative. He is also the Peter and Helen Bing Professor in Undergraduate Education and holds appointments as senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, professor of law and professor of political science (by courtesy) at Stanford.
Casper studied law at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg, where, in 1961, he earned his first law degree. He went to Yale Law School in 1961, obtaining his Master of Law degree a year later. He then returned to Freiburg, where he received his Doctorate in 1964. That same year, Casper emigrated to the United States, spending two years as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1966, he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School (and, one year later, also the Political Science Department), and between 1979 and 1987 served as Dean of the Law School.
Casper has written and taught primarily in the fields of constitutional law, constitutional history, comparative law, and jurisprudence. From 1977-91, he was an editor of The Supreme Court Review. His most recent book is Separating Power: Essays on the Founding Period (Harvard University Press, 1997). In 1989, Casper became Provost of the University of Chicago, a post he held until he accepted the presidency of Stanford University in 1992. Casper is a member of the Council of the American Law Institute, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society, and a member of the Order Pour le merite for the Sciences and Arts.
Bryan J. Wolf is the Jeanette and William Hayden Jones Professor in American Art and Culture, and co-director of the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SICA) and the Arts Initiative.
Wolf has written books on 19th-century American art as well as on Vermeer and early modern culture. He is the co-author most recently of American Encounters: Art, History, and Cultural Identity (Prentice Hall, 2007). During the 2005-2006 academic year, he served as a fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center while working on a new book, The Dream of Transparency. Wolf's work focuses on ways of seeing from the 17th century to the present, the intersection of painting and literature, and the fate of Enlightenment culture in the modern world.

Briefing
Since the 9/11 attacks, the Bush administration
has made broad claims that assert the President’s
inherent authority as our nation’s commander in
chief. These claims are deeply problematic
when taken within the text and history of the Constitution,
and they have resulted in real advantages for the
executive over the other branches
of our national government. How should we assess
the current and future balance of power?
The Speaker
Dr. Jack Rakove, W. R. Coe Professor of History
and American Studies and Professor of Political
Science at Stanford University, is the author of
four books, one of which won the 1997 Pulitzer
Prize in History, the 1997 Fraunces Tavern Museum
Book Award and the 1998 Society of the Cincinnati
Book Prize— Original Meanings: Politics
and Ideas in the Making of the Constitution (New
York: Alfred Knopf, 1996).
He has contributed chapters
to numerous scholarly collections
and written essays for various law reviews, including
the Stanford Law Review, University of Chicago
Law Review, Yale Law Journal and Yale
Journal of Law and Humanities. He has also published
numerous op-ed articles in such newspapers as the
Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune,
Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle and The
New York Times.
In November 1998 he testified at
the House of Representatives’ Judiciary
Committee hearings on the Background and History
of Impeachment. He has served as a consultant and
expert witness in several cases involving
Indian land claims in New York State dating to
the 1780s and has also worked on various national
radio and television projects.
Professor
Rakove’s current research focuses on the era of the American Revolution
and the adoption of the Constitution. His next
major project is a book entitled Revolutionaries:
Inventing an American Nation, 1773-1791, to
be published by Houghton Mifflin. He is also working
on a monograph tracing the constitutional history
of Indian relations from the end
of the colonial era through the leading decisions
of the Supreme Court in the early 1830s.

Stanford University & Photography
Photography has long been associated with the Stanford family and with the University.
Eadweard Muybridge, made the earliest photographic studies of motion at the horse
farm that was later to become Stanford University. In its early days, the Stanford
Art Museum also displayed a group of photographs by young Leland Stanford, Jr.
The museum is now the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts which holds its own significant
holdings of the work of Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Berenice Abbott and Garry
Winogrand, among others.
An interesting fact is that all of Ansel Adam’s children attended Stanford!
Ansel Adams at the MFA
Take a new look at the work of this great American landscape photographer through
an outstanding selection of images from The Lane Collection. You’re likely
to see an Ansel Adams you’ve never seen before.
Because the exhibition is drawn from the largest private holding of his work
in the world, rarely exhibited photographs from the 1920s through the ’70s
are hung side by side with the iconic images that made Adams famous. Footage
of Adams mountain climbing, a large-format camera on display, and video of the
photographer in the field and in the darkroom add to the complete picture of
Adams as artist and outdoorsman.
The great depth of The Lane Collection allows us to present an exceptional range
of work: early and late prints from the same negative, photographs of vastly
different scale, and such rarities as a trio of folding screens, mural-sized
prints, an early Sierra Club album, and even a Hills Brothers coffee can featuring
an image of Yosemite blanketed in snow.
Above all you’ll see well-loved photographs of the West and Southwest in
prints created by a master of the darkroom—such inspiring vistas as Monolith,
The Face of Half Dome and Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico—as well as intimate
portraits, still lifes, and close-ups.
