DC Book Club Discussion

Baltimore Book Club Discussion

The Baltimore book club will meet to discuss Life of Pi, a fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel published in 2001. The UK edition won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction in 2002. It was also chosen for CBC Radio's Canada Reads 2003. The French translation was chosen in the French version of the contest, Le combat des livres. The novel won the 2003 Boeke Prize, a South African novel award. In 2004, it won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature in Best Adult Fiction for years 2001-2003. An upcoming 3D adventure film based on the novel, directed by Ang Lee, is scheduled to be released on November 21st.

The December 10th book is The Master by Colm Toibin. Do not confuse this story with the movie of the same name. This novel was shortlisted for the 2004 Booker Prize and received the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, the Lambda Literary Award, the Los Angeles Times Novel of the Year Award and, in France, Le prix du meilleur livre étranger in 2005.

WDCSA Holiday Party

Looking to add some cardinal red to your holiday? Please join your fellow Stanford alums to celebrate the festive season at the DACOR-Bacon House. The venue (built 1824-25) is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and has been home to several Supreme Court Justices, members of Congress, and a Maryland governor. The DACOR-Bacon House will be decorated for the holiday season and complimentary hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be provided. The venue is located 4 blocks from the Farragut-West Metro station (Orange and Blue lines).

Price: The advanced registration price is $8 for WDCSA members, young alumni ('08 - '12), and guests; $12 for non-WDCSA members and guests. The price at the door is $12 for WDCSA members, young alumni ('08 - '12), and guests; $15 for non-WDCSA members and guests. We regret that no refunds will be given after December 3.

Ivy Singles Holiday Party

The Ivy Singles Social Club is hosting its annual holiday party once again at the elegant and historic DACOR-Bacon House (built 1824-25), home to several Supreme Court Justices and a Maryland governor. U.S. Congressman from New York, Robert Low Bacon and his wife, Virginia Murray Bacon, lived in the house until 1980. Upon her death Virginia bequeathed the building and furnishings as a memorial to her husband.

The DACOR-Bacon House and Foundation now serve as a "place to facilitate international peace and understanding" as well as a conference and meeting place for Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired (DACOR).

Each floor of the DACOR-Bacon House will be festively decorated for the holiday season. We will feast on hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and enjoy a fine selection of wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks from a cash bar. Consistent with our elegant surroundings, please come dressed in holiday, cocktail or business attire.

To register by mail, send a check for $40 payable to "WDCSA" or "Washington DC Stanford Association" and mail it to: Phebe Greenwood, 504 Gaslight Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23229. Checks must be received by Monday, December 3rd. Please note your school on the memo line of the check. Walk-ins are welcome at $45; however advance reservations are strongly encouraged as space is limited.

Take the Orange/Blue Line to Farragut West. Walk 3 blocks south on 18th St. Street parking is available after 6:30 pm. Please be aware that most nearby parking garages close early. Check with the garage attendant.
