Annual Big Game PartyYes, it's time once again for the annual Big Game party, sponsored jointly by the DC Stanford and Berkeley Alumni Associations! Big Game is on Saturday, November 23, at 3:30 P.M. Our Big Game Party will be held at Ramparts Restaurant, in Alexandria, Virginia. A shuttle bus will run from the King Street Metro station to Ramparts starting an hour before the game (at 2:30 P.M.) and run back to the Metro until an hour after the end of the game. The cost will be $18 per person at the door. This includes a coupon for $15 of food and drinks which you can order off the menu.
Directions to Ramparts:
From Washington DC: Take 395 South to Glebe Road/Shirlington exit. Take Shirlington exit and then follow signs to Quaker Lane. Take a left at the second stoplight, this is Fern Street. Ramparts is located at the end of the block on the right hand side.
From Springfield VA: Take 95 North which turns into 395 North. Take the Shirlington exit. From ramp follow Quaker Lane. At the second stoplight turn left on to Fern Street. We are located on the end of the block on the right side.
From Bethesda MD: Take 495 South, use Exit 13-14, George Washington Memorial Pky, East. Bear right onto 395 South ramp and merge onto 395. Exit at Route 120, Glebe Road/Shirlington. Take Shirlington exit and then follow signs for Quaker Lane. Turn left at the second traffic light onto Fern St. We are the end of the block on the right hand sign.
From King Street, Route 7: If you are traveling east on King Street turn right onto Quaker Lane. Turn right at the next light. This is Fern Street, we located at the end of the block on the right hand side. If your traveling west on King Street, turn left onto Quaker Lane. Turn right at the next light.
We have plenty of on street parking in the Fairlington area. The banks have no parking signs posted; however, as a part of their "good neighborhood" policy, they have not towed cars parked there after they are closed. Park there at your own risk. Ramparts also has space available in the medical building located at the corner of Kenwood & Osage.
Modern Drama Discussion GroupThe Modern Drama Discussion Group (www.footlightsdc.org) discusses plays over dinner with a guest speaker and attends theater performances at a discount. On Wednesday, November 6, author Sylvia Jukes Morris (Rage for Fame: The Ascent of Clare Boothe Luce) will lead a discussion of The Women (1936), the legendarily catty play by Clare Boothe Luce. Copies are available at Olsson's, Politics & Prose, & Backstage Books, either individually or in the Vintage Books collection Plays By and About Women. Bio of Ericka Markman:
Since joining the Children's Books and Educational Publishing unit, Erika has spearheaded the Society's strategy shift in publishing for the educational market. Her numerous accomplishments include launching a full map skill curriculum for grades k - 8, overseeing the creation of a critically acclaimed education website and developing National Geographic Magazine for Kids, which represents the Society's first foray into curriculum magazine publishing. Ericka holds a master's in education and an MBA from Stanford.
Bio of Hilary Johnson:
Hilary Johnson is the Managing Director of Save the Children's YouthNOISE (www.youthNOISE.com). YouthNOISE is a web-based global youth engagement initiative to inspire, connect and empower teens to help young people around the world. Since its launch last year, YouthNOISE has been hailed as Site of the Day by USA Today, the NY Times Upfront for Teens, and by Yahoo!, twice. YouthNOISE's content has also been nominated for and received several awards, including a Computer World Honors Award for the 'visionary use of technology to promote social change' nominated by Jerry Yang, the Founder of Yahoo! Hilary comes to YouthNOISE with a blend of private sector, non-profit, and government experience. Hilary is a graduate of Williams College and the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

We have 19 tickets for the Washington Wizards vs. The Utah Jazz at the MCI Center. The Utah Jazz feature John Stockton, Karl Malone and Stanford's Jarron Collins. Tickets are $30.00 each (normal price $50) and are in the first row of section 420. We also have 20 tickets for the Wizards vs. the New Jersey Nets at the MCI Center. The date is for Friday, February 21, 2003 at 7 pm. The Nets were last year's Eastern Conference champions and feature former Berkeley Bear Jason Kidd and Stanford's Jason Collins. Tickets are $45.00 (normal price $50) and are in section 400, rows C and D.

Free Membership YearFor the next few weeks, current WDCSA members can extend their membership for a full year for free to get newsletters through December 2003. Are you a current member? - unless you got this newsletter from somebody else, you are a current member. If you aren't a current member, we hope you will join - the cost is $10 for email members and $15 for mail members.
There are two ways to extend your membership:
1) The preferred way is online. Go to www.stanfordalumni.org/stanfordclub/dc/renew or click on the link at the top of this page You will need to register on the Stanford Alumni Association site unless you have already done so. Select the free membership plan for email only or mail current members. Leave the credit card information blank and click the "Process Payment" button
2) Respond to the annual fall membership mailer which will arrive in a few weeks. Make corrections to the contact information shown and mark "Current Member" on the form when you return it.
Members who have already paid for 2003 should follow these same procedures. Next year we will use your previous payment for 2003 to extend your membership through 2004. Promise!
