Beyond the Farm: Global Day of Service
Saturday, May 18 9 am-4 pm
Washington, DC

Meet fellow alums in your area. Create change while having a great time getting to know alumni-right in your backyard! WDCSA is sponsoring the following four projects:

1. CAFB Garden Building, 9am-12pm: The Capital Area Food Bank's Urban Demonstration Garden is a hand-on learning laboratory for food growing education. This project will include a wide variety of tasks associated with creating the infrastructure of the garden like digging, building, painting, planting and getting your hands dirty. This is a great opportunity for individuals and groups interested in volunteering outside and in helping to bring the food bank garden to life.

2. CAFB Warehouse Distribution, 12:30pm-4pm: Join the Capital Area Food Bank to help us in our new Food Distribution Center! This project typically involves packing and/or sorting donated food and assisting with various other tasks at the food bank. All tasks typically involve standing up and lifting up to 35 pounds. Temperatures can fluctuate, so please dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes.

3. AFAC Produce Bagging, 12:30-2:30pm: (Currently sold out) Join fellow alumni for produce bagging at the Arlington Food Assistance Center. The center is dedicated to providing supplemental groceries to residents who need assistance, and we will help sort and bag produce donated by vendors from local farmers markets. The minimum age to participate is 12, and closed-toed shoes are recommended.

4. The Farm at Walker Jones, 10:00am-2:00pm: Join fellow alumni as we help The Farm at Walker Jones promote early childhood education, enhance the science curriculum at the DC Public Schools, and feed those in our community who have the greatest need. We will be preparing The Farm for when the students arrive. This will include tilling the soil, weeding and pruning in the garden, and assisting with any other Farm related tasks. This project welcomes children ages 4 and up, with parental supervision. Participants are asked to bring their own bag lunch and bottled water.
