Join us at the lovely Mexican Cultural Institute as WDCSA hosts Joaquin and Juliàn Castro '96, who graduated with honors from Stanford and received their Juris Doctorates from Harvard. Your attendance at this event will help warmly welcome Representative Castro and Mayor Castro into the Washington, DC Stanford alumni community.
Joaquin Castro was elected last fall to to the US House of Representatives from San Antonio, Texas after serving five terms in the Texas State Legislature. He was chosen co-President of the House freshman Democrats and named Assistant Democratic Whip.
Joaquin's twin brother Julian is the second-term Mayor of San Antonio, the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American City, and was one of Time Magazine's "40 under 40" list of rising stars in American politics. He was earlier the youngest elected city councilman in San Antonio history. Introduced by his brother Joaquin, Mayor Castro gave the keynote address at the 2012 Democratic National Convention.
The Mexican Cultural Institute, a Washington DC Historic Landmark, is a Beaux Arts mansion that served as the Mexican Embassy from 1921 to 1990, and now shares Mexican art and culture with the Washington community.
The guest moderator for the evening will be Pete Williams '74, Justice Correspondent for NBC News.

JUNE 2013 EVENT SPOTLIGHT:
WOUNDED WARRIOR BIKE RIDE
From April 27 through April 28, the Stanford Military Service Network's "Bike Navy!" team rode 103 miles from the Pentagon to the historic battlefields of Gettysburg in the "Face of America" ride to support the Wounded Warrior Project. The two-day, non competitive ride had over 500 participants, including 125 disabled service members. The "Bike Navy!" team led by Jerry Reid (retired CAPT, GSB '94), raised over $24,000, enabling any disabled service member to participate in the event at no cost.

On May 18th, Stanford volunteers bagged and sorted produce donated by vendors from local farmers markets at the Arlington Food Assistance Center. The center is dedicated to providing supplemental groceries to local residents in need of assistance. WDCSA sponsored three other community service events that day across the DC metropolitan area. In total, over 80 alumni gave back to their local communities.

The 2013 Citi Open is an ATP World Tour 500 tournament, making it one of the top 20 men's tournaments in the world. We have the same 6 premium box seats to all sessions as in previous years (Aisle 36, Section 3). The seats are at the end of the court and very close to the court. These seats provide access to the Emirates Garden Club restaurant. We have two parking passes available for each session at $16/pass. We also have 4 upper level seats (Section 7, Row J) at the same end of the court as our boxes to each session. The featured matches are generally held in the main court where seating is reserved with the remainder in the outside courts where seating is open. Tickets also include the women's WTA International Level Event to be held at the same facility during this week. WDCSA HONORS: GRACE JONESOne of our own, Grace Jones, has been accepted into the Naval Officer Candidate Program. Grace is a graduate of the Stanford class of 2012, and moved to Washington after graduation to pursue her dream of becoming a Naval Officer. During her time in DC, she has been a part of the flag football, basketball, and softball teams. Commander James Cho, a fellow Stanford graduate, enlisted Grace on Thursday, April 18 at the Navy Memorial. Grace will start Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island later this summer. After graduation she will be attending the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Join us in wishing Grace a fond farewell and the best of luck in this endeavor.
- Stanford Military Service Network (SMSN) DC - Tiger Woods Foundation Tickets to the AT&T National Golf Tournament Free tickets available (while supplies last) beginning June 5. AT&T Tournament held at the Congressional Country Club, Bethesda, MD, June 26-30 The Tiger Woods Foundation is providing up to four free tickets to military (and Coast Guard) personnel (active duty, reserve, retired, National Guard, and their dependents), as well as current DOD and Coast Guard civilians to this golf tournament. Tickets will be available beginning June 5. All tickets must be picked up at an ITT/ITR office, and you must have access to the DoD installation to pick up tickets. Military tickets are good for any one day of your choice, Wednesday, June 26 - Sunday, June 30. - In keeping with its mission to promote diversity and foster cross-cultural dialogue, Stanford announced plans May 29th to establish The Markaz:Resource Center for Engagement with the Cultures and Peoples of the Muslim World. The new resource center, which was approved by Provost John Etchemendy, will be located in the Nitery Building of the Old Union complex. It is slated to open next September at the start of the 2013-14 academic year.
- Erik Davis, '08, became the 90th former Stanford student-athlete to see action in a Major League Baseball game, making his debut with the Washington Nationals June 2nd against Atlanta at Turner Field.
