DC Book Club Discussion
Sunday, July 9 5-7:45 pm
McLean, VA

The book group will discuss The Invisible Collection: Tales of Obsession and Desire, by Stefan Zweig. All are welcome to join the discussion and participate in the potluck dinner.

In this collection, there are peaks of extraordinary emotion, stories of all that is human crushed by the movements of history, of letters that fill a young heart or drive a person towards death, of obsession and desire. We will read the first five short stories (which include the most famous): ‘The invisible collection’ (1925), ‘Twilight’ (1910), ‘The miracles of life’ (1903) ‘A story told in twilight’ (1911), and ‘Wondrak’ (written during WWI). In ‘The invisible collection,’ a simple man acquires a world-class collection of rare prints before World War I. But he goes blind, and his family takes advantage of his blindness to sell off his collection to support themselves in the post WWI inflation that ravaged Germany. Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) was an Austrian novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer. At the height of his literary career, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the most popular writers in the world.
