Ivy Singles Holiday Party

1801 F Street, NW,
The Ivy Singles Social Club is hosting its annual holiday party once again at the elegant and historic DACOR-Bacon House (built 1824-25), home to several Supreme Court Justices and a Maryland governor. U.S. Congressman from New York, Robert Low Bacon and his wife, Virginia Murray Bacon, lived in the house until 1980. Upon her death Virginia bequeathed the building and furnishings as a memorial to her husband. Each floor of the DACOR-Bacon House will be festively decorated for the holiday season. We will feast on hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and enjoy a fine selection of wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks from a cash bar. Consistent with our elegant surroundings, please come dressed in holiday, cocktail or business attire.

On November 23rd, WDCSA contributed to the Superstorm Sandy relief effort by donating coats collected at the recent Stanford-Oregon game watch at Mackey's Tavern on November 17th.
New York Cares, an organization that has in its sights to collect 200,000 coats this year, has set up drop boxes all around the boroughs of New York City. One of these is mid-town at Bryant Park and we deposited our bagful of garment in a box painted like a gift box at the CitiPond ice rink near the corner of 40th Street and 6th Avenue.
Special thanks go to WDCSA President John Smithson who initiated the project, Jen Bullock and Chris Shinkman for making arrangements with Mackey's to conduct the coat drive, and to all those who parted with a coat so that one of Sandy's victims will be able to work on recovering his or her life with a bit more warmth. Every donation was greatly appreciated!
Rose Bowl Game Watch Party
Tuesday, January 1 4:30 pm
1823 L Street, NW,
Washington, DC 20038
For the first time since 2000, Stanford Football is returning to Pasadena on New Year's Day, a third consecutive BCS appearance!
Stanford will face Wisconsin in the 2013 Rose Bowl. WCDSA is hosting a local game watch at Mackey's Pub. No RSVPs required, just come wearing your Cardinal garb and be ready to cheer our team on to victory!
- Stanford scientists have developed a new technique for watching blood flow in living animals. The technique, which involves carbon nanotubes and lasers, will allow researchers to better study arterial diseases and therapies.
- Six Stanford scholars have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), an honor bestowed upon members of the association by their peers.
- Capital Alumni Network (CAN) Coed Basketball
Thanks to all who expressed an interest in playing CAN Basketball. However, because we need at least 15 people (including at least 4 women) to field a forfeit-proof team, we have not entered a team into the CAN league. Only six people expressed an interest in playing this season. However, spread the word around because we definitely want to enter a Stanford co-ed team next season.
- Stanford ASB Trips Focused on Human Rights and the Criminal Justice Coming to DC - March 23-30
The Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford is looking for alumni to assist with two Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trips coming to Washington DC, March 23-30, 2013.
Alumni support is needed to provide:
-Floor space for 14 students for one or more nights near a Metro stop (please note: students like to sleep in the same location so we discourage trips breaking up into multiple sleeping locations).
-Suggestions for low cost accommodations.
-Evening meals for the group of 14 in alumni homes.
-Ideas for speakers, organizations to visit.
If you think you can help this year's group, please complete a short form at www.stanford.edu/dept/haas/outside/ASB13.fb
DC Trips include:
Jared Naimark (Junior, Earth Systems) and Emily Witt (Sophomore, Human Biology) will lead 12 students on the Human Rights Advocacy and Ethics of Humanitarianism trip. Students will visit NGOs and
members of the human rights activist community to learn what it means to be responsible advocates in the world today.
Henock Dory (Junior, Political Science and Classics) and Dan Ashton (Junior, Economics) will lead 12 students on a trip examining our criminal justice system. Students will meet with people ranging from politicians to police to parolees to learn what is being done in our criminal justice system and what reforms are possible.
For 25 years the Haas Center has promoted servicelearning experiences through the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program. Many thanks to alumni who make these opportunities possible!
